QUESTION
Is there forgiveness? How do I receive forgiveness from God?
ANSWER
Acts 13:38 says, "Therefore, brethren, know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins has been preached to you all."
What is forgiveness and why do I need it?
The word “forgive” means to forget all that has past, to forgive, to cancel debts. When we do wrong to someone, we apologize so that the relationship with him can be restored. Forgiveness is not given because a person is entitled to be forgiven. No one deserves to be forgiven. Forgiveness is an act of love, compassion and mercy. Forgiveness is a decision not to take revenge on someone, regardless of what they have done to you.

The Bible tells us that we all need forgiveness from God. We have all sinned. Ecclesiastes 7:20 states, "There is no one on earth who does good and never does wrong." 1 John 1: 8 states, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and God is not in us." All sin is an act against God (Psalm 51: 4). As a result, we desperately need God's forgiveness. If our sins are not forgiven, we will suffer forever because of our sins (Matthew 25:46; John 3:36).
Forgiveness - How do I Get It?
Thank you, loving and gracious God - eager to forgive our sins! 2 Peter 3: 9 tells us, “It is not too late for the Lord to do what he has promised, even though some people think so. On the contrary, He is patient with you, because He does not want anyone to perish. He wants everyone to repent of sin. ” God desires to forgive us, so He provides forgiveness for us.
The only just punishment for our sin is death. The first half of Romans 6:23 states, “Death is the wages of sin…” Eternal death is the wages we receive as a result of our sin. God, in His perfect plan, became a man-Jesus Christ (John 1: 1,14). Jesus died on the cross, bearing the death penalty for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 teaches us, “Christ did not sin, but for our good God laid our sins on him. Thus we are reconciled to God, when we are united with Christ. ” Jesus died on the cross, bearing the punishment we deserve! As God, Jesus' death provided forgiveness of sins for the whole world. 1 John 2: 2 declares, “Through Christ our sins are forgiven, and not our sins alone, but also the sin of all men. ” Jesus rose from the dead, announcing His victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15: 1-28). Praise God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the second half of Romans 6:23 is true, “but the true and eternal life with Christ Jesus our Lord is the gift of God.”
Do you want your sins forgiven? Do you always have an insurmountable sense of guilt? Forgiveness for your sins is available if you place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Ephesians 1: 7 states, “For by the death of Christ we have been set free; it means that God has forgiven our sins. How glorious is the mercy of Allah. ” Jesus paid our debt so that we could be forgiven. All you have to do is ask God to forgive you through Jesus, believe Jesus died to pay the price of forgiveness for you - then God will forgive you! John 3: 16-17 contains this amazing message, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in the Son may not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save it. ”
